The Competitions & How to Compete

Why not try your hand at a variety of events, including speaking, writing, interviewing, and debate?  There’s no better time than now to improve your skills.

To compete, sign up for the competitions on site at convention. There will be sign up sheets at registration or at the door during posted competition times. Please see the upcoming convention program/agenda to see when these times are.

Current chapter presidents and state officers compete in the Master’s category and all others compete in the Regular category.  Topics include Prepared Speak Up, Prepared Write Up, Impromptu Speak Up, Impromptu Write Up, Interview/Portfolio (Brownfield, Armbruster, Mungenast), Debate, and Jaycee Jeopardy:

· Prepared Speak Up. Prepare a 4-6 minute speech based on the posted topic on the state convention Web site (will be posted 2 weeks prior).

·Prepared Write Up. Prepared Write Up is a 500-word essay (minimum) on the posted topic on the state convention Web site (will be posted 2 weeks prior) Writers are judged on content, theme development, conclusion, grammar, neatness, spelling, and format. E-mail submissions to the State Vice President of Individual Development by Thursday before Convention at midnight. Otherwise submissions due by Midnight Friday at the convention.

·Impromptu Speak Up. Competitors will be given a topic and a few minutes to prepare, and will then will deliver their speech.

·Impromptu Write Up. Competitors will be given a topic and 30 minutes to write a paper on the topic.

·Debate. Teams of 3 will compete in this competition. Only one Master’s level competitor on a team.

·Interview/Portfolio (Brownfield, Armbruster, and Mungenast). Competitors will have an interview with a panel of judges as well as submit a portfolio consisting of a Jaycee resume and supporting information. Brownfield is Jaycees who have been a member for under a year, Armbruster is for those over a year, and Mungenast is for Jaycee families.

·Jaycee Jeopardy. Each participant is given a written quiz, testing them on their knowledge of Jaycee facts.
